You ever get those white or skin-colored bumps that aren’t pimples but are just as annoying? They’re called closed comedones and while they’re not exactly pimples, they can sure be a pain in the butt to get rid of. According to dermatologist Dr. Anna Palayabyab-Rufino, "open and closed comedones are basically blackheads or whiteheads. The blackheads are open, meaning the pores are open. Sometimes, you get closed comedones when your sebaceous glands are overly active and from products that you use. You have to use things that can help exfoliate or peel off the upper layer so that they can ripen and fall off on their own."
Some tips she suggests for preventing closed comedones are to "control the oiliness of your face; observe the products that you're using if some of them have been triggering it; and using maintenance products like a retinoid—retinol, adapalene, retinoic acid—to help exfoliate the upper layers of the skin so that there's constant turnover of the skin, meaning it renews itself faster than usual."
If you really need help with those pesky bumps, getting it extracted by a dermatologist is the best option. But there are also a few ways to get rid of them and improve your skin texture at home. Keep reading below to find out.
Use a retinoid
The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid* 2% in Squalane PHP 850
Dr. Anna Palayabyab-Rufino suggests retinoids because it's the easiest treatment to get rid of the dead skin cells that stick to the skin's surface so that the texture will be smoother and comedones are prevented from forming. But you have to be careful using it because it can cause irritation so sun protection is important. We recommend The Ordinary's Granactive Retinoid* 5% in Squalane. Ease your skin to the treatment by using it twice a week and then gradually increase usage until your skin is used to it.

You’ve heard it before but we’ll remind you again: never go to bed with makeup on. Dirt, oil, and product buildup can clog your pores and cause unwanted breakouts. Remove makeup with a cleansing oil or makeup wipes and follow up with a facial wash.
Use a salicylic acid treatment
Cosrx BHA Blackhead Power Liquid PHP 990
Salicylic acid is a game-changer for acne-prone skin. It helps get rid of excess oil and deeply cleans the pores. Try the Cosrx BHA Blackhead Power Liquid, a treatment that contains 4% natural BHA, willow bark extract, and niacinamide to decongest and brighten the skin.
Keep your hands away from your face
Don’t pick and scratch on every bump you see on your face. Doing so will only make things worse and spread the bacteria.

Sun exposure can weaken your skin and increase the chances of clogged pores. Another important reason not to skip this step.
